Gallstones are hard stone-like substance that are formed in the gallbladder. These stones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. The gallbladder is a small sac near the liver and it stores bile that is produced by the liver. Bile is a greenish-brown liquid that helps in the digestion of fat. Bile travels to the small intestine through small tubes (bile ducts) where they help our body with digestion. Sometimes this bile solidifies and form a stone like substance in the gall bladder and near the bile ducts and this can create discomfort, pain and disrupt the normal functions of our body. Gallstone is quite a common medical problem and it is estimated that about 10 per cent of the population is affected by it. Two people in my immediate family had to undergo surgery to remove gallstones from their body which varied in sizes and color and prompted me to do research and create this page.

Few people with gallstones have symptoms because they usually stay in the gallbladder and cause no problems. However, sometimes the gallbladder may become inflamed by the gallstones leading to pain and complications. The most common and typical symptom of gallstones is pain on the right side or the upper abdomen. This pain may last for a few minutes to several hours and mostly felt after eating a heavy and high-fat meal. A person with gallstones may also feel pain under the right shoulder when lifting up their arms. Other symptoms may include fever, nausea and vomiting. You may also feel bloated-up. If the gallstones obstruct the bile duct passage then you might get jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Gallstones may also occasionally enter the duct leading to your pancreas. In some cases, a stone may block this duct - a condition called pancreatitis, which can be fatal if you don't receive treatment.

Simply put, gallstones are caused by the hardening of the bile fluid. Bile fluid is produced by the liver to help the body with food digestion. This fluid is composed of cholesterol, fatty compounds, bile salts, proteins, and a waste product known as bilirubin. If there is too much cholesterol, bile salts, or bilirubin in bile, it can harden into gallstones. Gallstones are made of cholesterol and bile pigments. Gallstones stones may form when bile contains too much cholesterol or bilirubin, or not enough bile salts. These stones may even form when the gallbladder does not empty completely or often enough.

There are a few medical tests that can be done to diagnose the presence of gallstones. => Ultrasound exam => Computerized tomography (CT) scan => Cholescintigraphy (HIDA scan) => Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) => Blood tests
Treatment of gallstones will be required if the gallstones cause inflamation and complication in your gallbladder and bile duct. Surgery to remove the gallbladder seem to be the most common treatment option as this will work with every patient. This kind of surgery is called cholecystectomy. Bile salt tablets may also be used to treat gallstones. These will help dissolve cholesterol salts over a long period of time. However, this treatment does not work for all patients and for larger stones. Visit the Mayo Clinic website for more treatment options.

Tips for prevention of gallstones: => avoid eating fatty foods with a high cholesterol content. => control your weight by eating a healthy diet and taking plenty of regular exercise. => Avoid crash diets or a very low intake of calories - less than 800 calories a day.
No matter what their size, shape or number, gallstones generally fall into one of two categories: => Cholesterol gallstones. These gallstones, often yellow in color, are composed mainly of undissolved cholesterol, although they can also have other components, such as calcium and bilirubin, the residue from the breakdown of red blood cells. About 80 percent of gallstones are cholesterol stones. => Pigment gallstones. These small, dark brown or black stones form when your bile contains too much bilirubin. It's not always clear what causes them. They tend to form in people with conditions - such as cirrhosis, biliary tract infection and sickle cell anemia - that result in excess bilirubin forming.
